1019 Front Street | The Stewart-Parker House. This c 1750 home is the only extant brick residence in Georgetown, South Carolina built before the American Revolution in the heart of the city. Originally constructed as a Georgian Style brick home for Robert Stewart (a landowner. rice planter & militia captain), the Stewart-Parker house remains magnificently perched upon the high bluff overlooking the Sampit River. Following Stewarts death in 1776, a wealthy merchant – Robert Stewart – purchased the estate transforming it into the Federal Style, stucco residence it is today. Tucker also added the rounded rooms to the home on either side, but more importantly and most noteworthy, hosted a tea in the house for George Washington during his President’s 1791 “Southern Tour”. Local tradition has long held that this house was not only the site of the party, but also where the President spent the night. Many of the homes original architectural elements have been retained through-out the years. The current owners have ensured the protection of the historic fabric of the house and grounds in perpetuity, by signing a Deed of Conservation Easement (exterior and interior) with the Historic Charleston Foundation for the protection of the property by all future owners. Documentation is available.

The Stewart Parker House is currently zoned as core commercial which typically offers options for its use, such as an office, tea room, event center, bed and breakfast, etc. The City of Georgetown will be happy to help with any questions about the future use of the property. Historic Georgetown is the third oldest city in South Carolina and locals think of it as what Charleston used to be. In 2018 USA today readers voted Georgetown as the #1 Best Coastal Small Town in the US. Areas of Georgetown have now been designated as an Opportunity Zone which could be a future benefit for the new owner or investor.
